Kal Tire Commits to Tire Recycling Initiatives Certain to Reduce Carbon Emissions.

New Facility Will Have the Ability to Recycle 20,000 Kilograms of Tires Each day.

Kamloops, BC- November 9, 2020

Kal Tires new facility in La Negra, Chile set to open in January ,2021 will have the capacity to recycle nearly 20,000 kilograms of tires each day through a process that chemically decomposes organic materials with heat in the absence of oxygen, and turns tires into fuel oil, steel wire and carbon black. Kal Tire also opened a facility in Legal, Alberta meant to recycle nearly 6000 OTR ( Off The Road ) tires each year from mine sites around Alberta.

“Until now, there has not been a viable disposal or reuse solution available for scrap tires on mine sites in western Canada. Tires have been reused as berms or retaining walls or stockpiled and in some cases they’ve been buried. We sell and service these tires, and we wanted to offer customers a simple, proven, environmentally friendly alternative when tires reach the end of their life.  says Bennett. (Former Vice President of Operation at Kal Tire)

A second form of tire recycling is called retreading. Kal Tire is the largest retreading company in Canada. This is the process of buffing old rubber off of a tire, making any necessary repairs, and then rebuilding the tire. This process is crucial for the environment as it saves approximately 57 litres of oil compared to building a new tire. Furthermore, retreading and repairing tires leads to less demand for the production of new tires, as well as a reduction in scrap tires piling up in landfills. Rotting old scrap tires are one of the many factors contributing to our environmental crisis. They are harmful for many reasons, as the tires break down harmful chemicals are released into the ground that can greatly impact the environment. According to ‘EcoGreen’ other negative impacts include combustibility, pests, and general waste.

Kal Tire was founded in 1953 by Tom Foord in Vernon, BC and is now Canada’s #1 independent tire dealer, and is also Canada’s largest tire retreader as they retread approximately 350’000 tires in their 12 retread facilities spread across 5 continents.
